Dont fret, this old softie hasnt suddenly turned into an an all-guns-ablazing activist overnight but I have come across some good news that will help householders across the country quietly join the move towards a more active zero waste lifestyle.

Reported in this weeks LetsRecycle bulletin is the news that the UKs key supermarkets (Asda; The Co-operative Group; WM Morrison; J Sainsbury’s; Tesco; and Waitrose) are officially accepting thin plastic film packaging through their existing in-store bag recycling facilities.

This wont be a new idea to some as several supermarkets have been doing this already, but it is welcome news that this recycling facility is now officially being rolled out at more than 4500 stores across the UK, providing customers with a place to leave packaging such as cereal bags, toilet roll packaging and multi-can wrappers.

What really struck me about the value of collecting back these materials was that according to LetsRecycle, this type of plastic makes up 43% of all plastic household packaging, weighing in at 645,000 tonnes each year.   Plastic bottles make up only 32%, or 480,000 tonnes, by comparison.  Wowsers!  It just goes to show how much there is knocking around this planet of hours and thats a lot of plastic that would otherwise go to waste if it is simply dumped in the rubbish bin.

Slimming your waste at work a Suffolk case study

Regular visitors to this blog will be familiar with my passion for slimming down our rubbish at home, but I am also a sticky-beak when it comes to finding out what goes on behind closed doors in organisations across the country.

Inspired by my recent Smart Mums visit to British Gas, where I managed only a passing glimpse of their internal recycling activities, I was keen to find a smaller company closer to home that would allow me to have a poke about their own waste management facilities.  I really dont think I could have found a finer example of corporate recycling.


Music Sales is an international company which specialises in music copyright, printed music, book publishing and digital distribution. It also has 20 music shops that fall under the MusicRoom brand as well as 125 affiliated stores around the UK.

Rob Child, who manages the companys waste stream took me on a tour of their distribution centre, which is based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

The first thing that struck me was the relevance of Robs role within the business. Until fairly recently he was responsible for managing the procurement of packaging materials that are required for distribution.  It was only 18 months ago that a newly appointed Head of Distribution had the vision to expand his responsibilities to incorporate waste management.  

Waste is something that Music Sales cannot take lightly. The company distributes to the public as well as trade customers in over 100 countries and its online business provides access to over 250,000 products.  From a waste management perspective, this means a heck of a lot of packaging coming through its warehouse door.

The companys trade waste service is provided by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.  Until 18 months ago, much of the packaging waste was landfilled and Rob explained that when he took over the waste management role, the landfill skip was collected two or three times per week.

These days, their landfill skip is now only collected just once a fortnight and as a result, their waste management bill has dropped by two thirds.

That is a startling saving, which has been achieved simply by diverting recyclables out of landfill through easy in-house segregation.

The warehouse now separates cardboard, paper and plastic film, which are common materials that travel through its distribution facilities.  These are sorted by staff into the crates that are provided before being baled ready for collection.

When you consider that last year alone, 90 tonnes of paper were handled by the distribution centre as well as 10 tonnes of plastic packing, responsible procurement and recycling processes can make a huge contribution to the companys waste footprint.  Rob recognises this and since taking over the waste management role, his own procurement processes have led to a focus on packaging that contains recycled materials as well as products that can be more easily recycled.

But the companys waste reduction activities dont stop there. As well as core business recycling, Music Sales takes legal responsibility for its electronic waste.  Rob also encourages staff to use desktop recycling boxes and recycle their coffee machine cups and refillable Thermos flasks were provided to staff in the warehouse, which has helped to cut down even further on waste.  Dotted around the site are trade-waste equivalents of the wheelie bins that St Edmundsbury residents can find at home, which means that staff can also recycle aluminium cans and mixed plastics.

In just 18 months, the culture at Music Sales has totally changed and Rob is pleased with the fast turnaround.  A waste audit conducted by an independent company a year ago revealed that they were already achieving so much, they couldnt find any other way of improving their process.

Personally I think the transformation of the companys waste stream is a real success story and it would be great if it could inspire other businesses to follow suit.  Not only has the business seen a great financial saving from diverting recyclables from landfill, but Rob and his colleagues are also delighted with the contribution that the company is making regarding sustainability.

Measure your recycling with the new Recyclometer

Measuring the impact of recycling is always a challenge, especially when trying to communicate the wider benefits of what is, lets face it, a pretty mundane household task.

However, during the summer, along with other bloggers, I was brought in to help road-test Coca-Colas Recyclometer, a brand new stats-crunching tool, which has been developed in association with WRAP.   After a few tweaks, the Recyclometer has now been officially launched, on the companys website and at Recycle Now. providing consumers with a means of calculating the wider impact of their recycling activity, by simply translating the action into energy saving data.

Saving energy and fuel resources are one of the key beneficial outcomes of recycling and the Recyclometer tool demonstrates the savings across a wide range of materials that youd find on your cupboard shelves.

For example, simply totting up the contents of my recycling actions today reveals that Ive saved enough energy to power a lightbulb for 12 hours.   Widen the impact of this nationally and the figures highlight that enough energy would be saved to power over 84,000 lightbulbs for a whole year.   Thats quite an incredible figure from just a few juice bottles, a can, our local newspaper, a breakfast cereal box and a loo roll tube.  It also demonstrates how wasteful it would be if I just bunged these into landfill.

Eat your Veggies 16 oz worth per day!

VEGETABLES

The easiest way to start is to pick the fav vegetables and have them precut and washed so they are ready to go. I also bought those Ziploc microwave steamer bags and pre-measured a weeks worth of 8 oz vegetable bags. That way they are ready to pop in.

Of course, salad gives you a lot of volume, since it doesnt weigh much, but I get sick of salads. I prefer just thick cup veggies with salad dressing over them for lunch.

For supper, bok choy, asparagus, zucchini are the fastest fat burners. I eat one of those (sometimes the full 8 oz) everyday. I love them, so it helps, but it may not turn your crank. Just find what you love from the list.

Since Im used to using butter on things, I bought the Becel spray which has 0 calories and is on the list. I put that and some pepper, garlic or Mrs. Dash on my hot veggies, and Im in heaven. I get what Im used to, but a healthier alternative.

I found most of the brands at Loblaws - as well as some good containers (a 3-space divided plastic shallow plate with lid for lunches) and a 2 litre jug great for work.

A few things like the Vlasic pickles are at IGA (which Loblaws doesnt have.) Just take a good evening by yourself to go through the shelves and youll see where everything is.

I love tomatoes and peppers, and was using them a lot in the tandoori or curry chicken dishes I was making. There are no restriction for those, but the doctor recommended balancing the food moderately rather than overloading on any one type of food. It goes against what Im doing with my bok choy, asparagus or zucchini, but those foods seem to promote loss than tomatoes and peppers.

Who knows...

For tomatoes though, I use the Aylmer ACCENTS Original (with garlic and herbs) diced or stewed tomatoes for recipes. Yum!

Scrapping your car Ever thought about doing it for charity

Now dont fall off your chairs at hearing from me twice in one month will you!  Well it is March you know, almost springtime, which means Im coming out of my winter hibernation and getting out more.  I even ventured down to London AGAIN last week, to celebrate MyZeroWastes shortlisting in the PEA Awards, where they were just pipped to the post by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls Landshare campaign.  Great news and well-deserved for the Landshare team but MyZeroWaste was also a real winner in my eyes.


The following day, while I was still in the big smoke,  I also took the opportunity to find out more about an amazing but relatively new social enterprise that Id discovered only hours before Id left Suffolk.  Called Give A Car, it wont surprise me if they too make it on to the green carpet of some prestigious awards during the next twelve months.  Their concept is none other than genius!

Based in Putney, Give A Car was founded in January last year by graduate Tom Chance, with the aim of raising money for charity.  Since its inception, the fundraising organisation has processed approximately 3,000 cars nationwide, distributing a whopping £250,000 amongst 250 registered charities.

And the idea is simple.  When a driver needs to scrap their car, they simply contact Give A Car, who will arrange its collection at no cost to the owner.  The vehicle is assessed and is either resold at auction or sold for salvage.  Either way, 75% of the return to Give A Car is given to the charity of the donors choice . The remaining 25% is retained by the fundraising company to cover administration overheads.

And everyone benefits, especially charities who are always on the look out for new and inventive ways of raising much-needed funds.

Can you recycle plastic film at your supermarket

Whilst shopping today, I noticed that the carrier bag recycling bin had a new label on it, announcing that the store is also now collecting plastic film, you know the stretchy stuff that you get around loo rolls, multipack shrink-wrap as well as the bags inside cereal boxes.

So as its National Zero Waste Week, Im setting you a mini challenge.

Next time youre at the supermarket, it would be great if you could check if yours has got a similar facility.

If youve not spotted it before you may be surprised as this should now be available in over 4,500 supermarkets nationwide.  If you dont believe me, take a look at this press release that was published by the British Retail Consortium in April.


Of course the next step is to check the recycling information on packaging.  If you see a label like the one shown above, youll know that you can add it to the carrier bag collection as its made from either LDPE or HDPE plastic film.  If the labellings not clear, which is still often the case, you could always check with customer services.

So who made your pants Lets talk about ethical underwear

Being a lover of fancy lingerie and a right nosey parker, I couldnt resist the opportunity to visit ethical pants manufacturer Who Made Your Pants?.

I have been following them on Twitter for about six months, having spotted that they use end-of-line lace, which other lingerie manufacturers discard at the end of their seasonal runs. However, I soon discovered that this business was not just about saving waste, it was about turning around peoples lives too.

And its that which tempted me to scoot all the way from Suffolk to Southampton for the companys open day and to finally have the chance to meet founder Becky John (pictured left) and to find out more about what goes on at Who Made Your Pants?.

Immediately, it was easy to detect the warm and welcoming atmosphere of a small enterprise that was specifically created to help the people who work for it. As Della, the Operations Manager took me on a tour of the business she described how the enterprise helps women, such as refugees, get onto the work ladder, in a way that allows them to overcome language barriers and other cultural hurdles.

Although clearly working as a team to create what felt like a family atmosphere, the philosophy of the organisation, which is managed as a co-operative, stems from one womans passion, that of Becky John, to tackle, in her own words, the issues of waste, both in wasted stuff and wasted lives.

Becky understands what this means, having volunteered with Amnesty and having been nurtured through her own life-changing experiences. With women who have arrived into the country from as far afield as Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan, she wants Who Made Your Pants? to work for them, as well as enabling them to work for the enterprise.

It was very easy to see her passion as she explained,

"The women we work with are marginalised and isolated in so many ways and they are bursting to do something.  They are just like you and me and any other woman. They get bored, passionate and curious and thats why we are here, to unleash that and do something good."

Becky continued to tell me about one of the younger women who had arrived from Afghanistan with her mother. When she first met her at a refugee organisation, her body language showed her distinct lack of confidence. She was hunched over the table, very nervous and shy and she knew no English.  Shes now been to college for a couple of years, has done a media course and a computer course and now confidently teases her team. Becky recognises this as an amazing change and is just one of the examples of how shes seen her staff develop.

"I believe in this, and this organisation, with everything I am," she added. "Its about an opportunity to help women learn and help them feel empowered, as well as providing good role models for the daughters in the family."

And thats one of the reasons why Becky had committed to sponsoring last weekends Winchester Science Festival. She wants girls and women to follow their curiosity and have the confidence to believe in themselves.

I liked Becky very much and loved the environment that she and her team had created.  And by team, I dont just mean the Management Team.  It was everyone in this enterprise that makes the Who Made Your Pants? co-operative work so well.  Whether its translating basic vocabulary into one of the many languages, helping the women have access to office computers, respecting prayer routines or everyone enjoying delicious home-made food thats brought in to share.

Of course no visit to any organisation like this would be complete without a nosey around the bins and it was great to see that all the lace off-cuts are sent to a local social enterprise to stuff cushions, so no waste is created.  Theyve also had requests from Knickerbockaglory artist Fanny Gogh, to provide extra lace for her fabulous fundraising collages, which helped raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

But recycling and repurposing doesnt stop with lace. Waste reduction is really at the heart of the business and almost everything acquired into the office is reused or upcycled, including computers, printers, desks, whiteboards, book cases and some reconditioned machinery.

"I love old and have always loved things that are different," Becky tells me. "Even our stock boxes are from the Ordnance Survey."

As she shows me the page of the annual report, which highlights how little waste they created in 2011, I realise that even as a small business it weighs waste to ensure that its included in the business assessment criteria.

Becky nods at my positive response.

"If you are going to be a good organisation, you have to start at the very beginning, so weve done this from the start. We also try to engage the women in the recycling process and help them understand why it needs to be done."

She tells me that this enterprise could have been based around anything, but due to her ludicrous love of underwear, a passion to which I also confess, and her desire to provide the world with a fabulous ethical choice, knickers it is!

Having risen out of her fundamental question about who made her pants and the welfare of the women concerned, Who Made Your Pants? has made great progress in helping a small group of women in the UK and Becky still campaigns to raise awareness of the issue of sweatshops.

Having seen my own pants being made last Tuesday, by a small team of women working for an enterprise that cared about their welfare, the first thing I did on my return was to contact my long-standing lingerie brand to query their own ethical and sustainability policy.

Seven days later, Ive still not received a reply but I shant give up.

People like Becky John really do make you stop and think, and if you are inclined to begin asking questions about fast fashion, you cant really find a better place to start than with pants!
