Week 19 57 lbs down and only 10 more to go!!

Vintage Catwalk. Twiggy Cat!Image by karen.tkr via Flickr

Im jumping for joy with a spring in my step. Im officially down to 150 today.

Do you know what that means?

10 more pounds until I reach my goal weight of 140! Holy S&%*!!

I was so good this weekend. We had a Friday lunchtime soccer match with some colleagues (in the 30+ 0C heat) and got in some good cardio for a half hour. Then for the weekend, I did some walking and stuck to the diet religiously (of course.) That yielded a good 3 lb drop for todays weigh-in.

Its interesting though. Ive cut back my liquids to 2 litres only - and really spaced it out throughout the day. I didnt have any pop (no Diet Coke or Coke Zero) and took 2 Senokot.S tablets with each meal, which really kept things moving. I have come to realize that the Aspartame holds is the water retainer and evil culprit to my weight loss success. Good riddance!

I checked my urine with the pee-sticks (my very technical term) a few times a day and I was a consistent 2 (++) burn. Not bad.

Anyway, I go for my Maintenance Consultation tomorrow to see what the revised diet holds that Ill be on and see what I can reintegrate. I reall yhope I see some popcorn and maybe a glass of wine in there somewhere...

140s - here I come!

RECYCLE ON THE GO with Shedwyn and friends

WELL WELL WELL.  Im still getting over the shock of being outed recently by The Observers very lovely Lucy Siegle who just so happened to reveal to the nation, my peculiar habit of embarrassing the kids by taking photos of municipal trash cans.   Yes I know....!

But I admit it.  Indeed I really do have a sad collection of bin photos, recycling ones in particular, taken whilst out shopping and on holiday, both in the UK and overseas, Well it IS research you know!  In fact this is the blogpost that initially grabbed the attention, taken on a day-trip to Barry Island in South Wales, the spiritual home of sitcom Gavin & Stacey.

Now I dont think Im the only one to notice how these hight street recycling bins are starting to pop up in all manner of places in the UK.  And I bet Im not the only one to have taken photos of them either (although most people will only have included them unknowingly in the background). But if you start looking, youll find them in many high streets and tourist hotspots around the country, and theyre proving to be a very valuable tool in helping the UK reduce the amount of plastic, aluminium and paper thats sent to landfill or incineration.

They come in all shapes and sizes too.  Take the one above for instance, which was snapped at Brussels Eurostar terminal.  It even looks like a giant shape-sorter.   Of course there are plenty more inconspicuous ones that often get overlooked, which is why Rachelle Strauss at My Zero Waste and I are launching a challenge to promote these very useful facilities and find out exactly where they are.

So the challenge ladies and gentlemen, is TO COLLECT 1000 PHOTOS or VIDEOS by the end of this years National Zero Waste Week, which takes place on 5-11 September.

Yes 1000!  I know!!!

Thats more than this busy mother of two can manage, which is why weve employed the talents of our bespectacled pal SHEDWYN, whos as mad as brush and will be popping up in all sorts of places around the country taking photos.  Here she is....getting prepared for some hard and fast recycling action on the streets of London, either that or trying to flag down a taxi with an empty drinks bottle and a copy of The Metro.

But good grief, WHERE did she get those glasses!!!  Oh bless her.

Anyway, Shedwyns other mission is to make recycling bins as entertaining as possible and shell even be encouraging the odd comedian or busker to strut their stuff as they recycle on the go.

But even this Welsh Wonderwoman cant do this without any help either.  She needs YOUR help and WED LOVE YOU TO JOIN IN TOO.  Its really easy.  We simply need you to snap & post a few photos, thats all.

Whenever you spot a public high-street recycling bin, it would be great if you could take a quick photo and post it onto our NEW FACEBOOK PAGE!   The funnier or more unusual, the better.  You could put yourself in the frame too, or even send an entertaining video to show off your hidden (or not so hidden) talents. Theyll also be entered into our photo collection as well as any sketches or artwork submitted by artists.  To add them directly, you just need to like the new Facebook page and upload them straight to the pages wall, which you will find at: Standup for Recycling out on the street: The 1000 bin challenge.

Just remember to include the town and location of where you found the bin.  It would be brilliant to get submissions of overseas bins too, especially if they offer extra design features, such as voice-activation or play music.

Even if you dont have a Facebook account, you can still join in by sending your submissions to: standup@therubbishdiet.co.uk and we will post them online for you.

All submissions added will be automatically entered into the Zero Waste Week annual competition, details of which will be announced at www.myzerowaste.com at the end of July.  The final deadline for the challenge is 11 September and all winners will be revealed at the end of September.

Our 1000 bin challenge is an independent social-media campaign, coordinated by The Rubbish Diet blog and My Zero Waste.  It is officially being launched on Monday 20th June to show our support for WRAPs Recycle Week 2011 campaign, which itself runs until 26th June.

And this years Recycle Week looks like its going to be a real brilliant one.  The theme is Recycling - Home and Away and aims to demonstrate the positive effect of recycling a little bit more, whether at home, at work or out-and-about. Theres even a competition to guess the location of  some on-street recycling bins at the Recycle Now website.  I reckon old Shedwyn will be able to have a good crack at that, given the way she gets around!

The other big news this year is that anti-litter organisation Keep Britain Tidy is also partnering with WRAP and has been working with pilot authorities to launch this years Recycle Week, encouraging organisers of Big Tidy Up events to recycle litter.  More information about Recycle Week and how you can get involved is now available at www.recyclenow.com and www.thebigtidyup.org.

So what are you waiting for?  Theres lots going on and Im looking forward to seeing what youll get up to.  Whatever it is, just remember to keep it clean...AND remember to take your camera.

1000 photos eh.....whoa...this will definitely be a challenge and a half, especially as well only have just 12 weeks.   Its time for Shedwyn and her mates to get snapping.

National Zero Waste Week 2011 Just one week to go

Just like the kids starting a new school year, I cant believe that Zero Waste Week has come around so quickly or indeed that its in its fourth year.  It doesnt seem that long since Mrs Green at myzerowaste.com held the very first National Zero Waste Week back in 2008.

Back then, it felt like a huge challenge and I thought Id take a walk down memory lane to the preparations that Mrs Green was making for her very first ZWW three years ago.  I remember packaging being one of the key problems, as it still is for many people whod want to have a go today.  However, undeterred, Mrs Greens Zero Waste Week saw over 160 people pledge to increase their commitment to reducing waste, reusing, recycling or composting, providing a great platform for her Myzerowaste site to host its second National Zero Waste Week in 2009, encouraging supporters this time to tackle their food waste.

Last years Zero Waste Week returned with an even greater emphasis on food waste, with Mrs Greens campaign week gaining official support from celebrity chef Brian Turner CBE, who shared tips on how he uses up ingredients and how he composts while he cooks.   For me it was a great excuse to find my own local chef and hang out at one of my favourite eateries, picking up tips on how good food can go a lot further with some extra imagination and fabulous recipes.

And so to this year.  As ever, National Zero Waste Week 2011 comes with another waste-busting topic, with this years challenge "Reducing waste while away from home".   This theme holds a special significance for me as it was the same unexpected twist that came with the local councils ZWW challenge back in March 2008, where any waste that I created "on-the-go" had to be brought home and added to my rubbish bins booty, which would be declared later that week.   With such a personal challenge back then, is it any wonder that I get excited about the "recycle-on-the-go bins" that feature in the 1000 bins campaign.

So, what are we asking you to do this year?

Thats simple. Whilst getting on with reducing waste on the home front, Mrs Green and I would love you to become more aware of the rubbish that can be created whilst youre out and about and take measures to reduce such waste that would ordinarily end up in landfill.

From tackling disposable cutlery to recycling drinks containers, there are loads of tips over at the National Zero Waste Week 2011 information page, where you can also share your own ideas in the comments section.  If youre on Facebook and want to receive further news, theres also an event page, which already has 190 people attending.

Dont forget, National Zero Waste Week is also the finale of the 1000 bins photovideo challenge.  Thanks to all who have submitted photos and videos this far.  There are now only two weeks to go to submit your entries and be in with a chance of winning a gorgeous Luciana clutch bag from Bottletop.org, or a fabulous waste-busting goodie bag from Onya Bags, which includes an Onya Back, Onya Bag, Onya Lunch, Onya Weigh, H2O Bottle and a People Towel.

So please send in your entries by Midnight (GMT) 11 September, either at www.facebook.com/1000bins or email me directly at standup@therubbishdiet.co.uk.  Mrs Green and I will then get cracking on voting for the most interesting bin photo as well as the one that made us smile the most and will announce the winners as soon as weve stopped laughing.

Heres one of my own photos taken whilst out and about at a festival in Staffordshire....go on, surely you can do better...............

7 pounds to go!

Well, I must admit, I returned to the strict diet. I dont think I was quite ready for the Maintenance Program. Not that I didnt welcome the additional foods I could reintegrate, but I wasnt pleased with myself that I wasnt at my goal weight of 140.

So, I returned to the strict diet to lose the last 10 pounds and go from there.

POST SCRIPT: Its funny too. Last week I just had the ravenous cravings for chocolate and sweets, and what came along? My period. I never have cravings for sweets, and havent felt the need to eat them while on the strict diet before, but all of sudden it was like an all-consuming need to eat chocolate. Then came Aunt Flo. A coincidence? I think not. One thing Ive learned on the diet is that your body tells you what it needs, and when it needs it, and signals the onset of things before you even realize it. Iron, chocolate, salt - when youre menstruating, your body sends some interesting signals to the brain. I just substituted chocolate cupcakes with the Dr. Bernstein Protein Chocolate & Peanut Butter Bar = 1P to satisfy my craving.

Im now down to 146.8 lbs as of Friday, so only 7 more to go!

The nice thing about the Bernstein program is that it is focussed on your needs, so I had no problem going in on Tuesday (for the Maintenance check-in) to report that I wanted to come back on Strict on Wednesday. Seamless - no issues - and totally supportive when I expressed that I want to be at 140 before I start.

This time, once I use up my credits to the end of 140 lbs, Ill be better prepared to do Maintenance on my own. I can always pop in for a month of maintenance at $150 if I feel I need it.

* * *

New Clothes

As a treat to myself, I received in the mail some clothes I ordered. A bad idea usually, since you never quite know if the fit is going to be right, but I took the plunge anyway with the end-of-season sales.

JCrew was my shop of choice, and I picked up some lovely items. Ill take pictures shortly, but suffice to say the lovely Jackie O-style silk and summer sheath dresses are to die for! I will still get them slightly altered (straps as usual) and Ill need to find those weird bras that are necessary for low-back revealing dresses, but a small inconvenience for my new look.

I also got my new size 10 pants altered a little (waist was a little too big) so Im ready for work on Monday!

Body Wrap

I also spent the morning on Friday at a local spa getting an Anti-Aging Body Wrap. If you havent tried it yet, its quite an experience. Youre mummified (except your face) and through a series of apparatus and vitamin and mineral treatments, your lymphatic system excretes toxins and excess water from your body, resulting in some minimal inch loss and health benefits.

Of course they discuss the homeopathic diet alternatives, mainly the Alkaline/Acid Diet, and the evils of sugar, etc.

As I reviewed their espoused diet 70 Alkaline/30 Acidic approach, it looks quite similar to the Bernstein approach. The key is to focus on the fruits and vegetables, and balance the protein, while removing the over-acidic foods that are so prevalent in our North American diet.

Im going to take some time today to deconstruct the Strict Diet (my food selections) within the Alkaline/Acid framework and Calorie framework, to see where I sit.

I think it will help me gauge when I start Maintenance, of what Im reintroducing to balance the calories and nutrients and have a bit of a roadmap for myself.

The nice thing about the Alkaline/Acid framework is that it allows for 4oz of "good quality red wine" daily. Sign me up for that!

One Down Three to Go Atkins Wrap Up

Fall has finally arrived here in earnest, leaves are blooming colors, air is crisper, days are growing shorter, and I have reached my last day of Atkins. Its amazing how quickly the last three weeks have flown by. Despite many of my issues on Atkins, I am stunned at how quickly it has become habit. I know the carbohydrate counts of almost all of my favored foods and its easy to keep track and make the right choices in terms of my hunger, nutritional needs and cravings.

While I may have complained a bit about Atkins and its restrictive limitations, its not the demon I have, in fits of anger, made it out to be. But neither is it all sunshine and rainbows; like many things, there are both upsides and downsides to Atkins.

Here are, in my experience, the benefits and drawbacks :

Benefits :                                                                     Drawbacks :

- Rapid weight loss                                                       - Restrictive

- Easy to follow                                                            - Not athlete friendly

- Filling                                                                         - Requires carbohydrate counting

If Im being honest, Atkins was much easier than I thought it would be. While I knew there were plenty of foods I had to say no to, including freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in my chemistry class, the fact that I could go home and eat plenty of allowed foods made it much easier to resist. I didnt feel like I had to hungry all the time, a rarity on many diets. The rules of allowed and forbidden foods are simple, and require no guesswork.

On the other hand, I very much dislike the weakness I feel when it comes to working out. I feel fine on a normal, walking around basis, but most activities that substantially raise my heart rate seem much more difficult. Ketosis is not athlete friendly. (Not that Im a full blown athlete, but Im extrapolating here) I also have found Ive gotten kind of bored with the foods I am allowed to eat. While I have pushed myself to eat more of the items on the Atkins list that I would normally avoid, there are only so many items on that list.

Atkins certainly has a place in the modern lifestyle diet field, as its weight loss, during induction, may well be unparalleled. For a person with a lot of weight to loose, Atkins might be a good way to kickstart that loss. Especially in a culture that places so much emphasis on processed sugar, it would certainly be educational to be forced to avoid almost all forms of refined carbohydrate, replacing the carbs with more nutritionally sound food.

However, from a nutritional standpoint, I shudder to think of how many saturated fats and processed foods I have consumed on Atkins. Though I understand most people (myself included) would go stir-crazy without some form of sugar in their lives, I simply cannot endorse sugar substitutes as being in any way healthy. Likewise, Atkins allows foods like diet sodas, mayonnaise, gelatin desserts and cream, many of which, in my opinion, shouldnt really be a part of a truly healthy diet.

Perhaps this is why, during my research I have come to admire some of the theory behind Paleo, which I begin tomorrow. Paleo emphasizes natural, unprocessed foods. Type of macromolecule aside, (carbohydrate, fat or protein) it is apparent to me that the best foods are the most natural ones. Well see how Paleo fares under my very intense scrutiny. Until tomorrow!
