Can you help Blue Crane Recycling help people in need

One of the children who Blue Crane Recycling are trying to help

Have you ever had an email from someone overseas asking for help?  Like me, youve probably had many, marked them as spam and deleted them from your mailbox for good. But one message stood out earlier this year.  It was from a lady called Megan Cockroft, who is fighting to set up a recycling initiative to help some of South Africas poor and this is what she said.

"I know I am taking a chance here but I was wondering if you perhaps know of a recycling organisation in your country that might be interested in sponsoring such an undertaking? At the dump site there are scavengers, very poor people that live there and scratch though the garbage daily with their children, little babies walking in the filth. My first aim is to create a creche  for these children away from the dump-site, a clean healthy place with proper food and care and schooling. The second priority is to help these people to earn an income for themselves by creating self employment opportunities and job creation. When the recycling facility is set up a number of these people will be employed on a permanent basis, the rest will be used to sort the waste into different categories such as glass, tin, plastic, paper etc. this will be weighed and paid accordingly. As the business develops we will look to incorporate housing facilities for them as well".
Well, could you turn your back on such a request for much needed help?  I certainly couldnt, so short of flying out to South Africa I endeavoured to find out more about Megans project via a series of lengthy emails and work out how best I could offer my support.  The starting point is to share her story here in the hope to link Megan with organisations and individuals who can lend a helping hand.

 Meet Megan Cockroft.

Originally from Port Elizabeth, South Afica, she and her husband Rick decided to move their young family away from the city to a small town in the Little Karoo after an experience of violent crime and numerous house breakings.  This was almost three years ago.

Within twelve months of moving to the country, they set up a small recycling business, Blue Crane Recycling, a great idea, but one that has been fraught with a number of stumbling blocks.  However, no matter how tough, Megans journey has forged her inspiration to set up an enterprise that will help others who are in greater need than her.

"We initially got the business off the ground and started working," Megan told me, "but seven months later we had a terrible fire at our work premises and nearly lost everything. Our local municipality granted us permission to move the business to the local dumpsite and subsequently gave us a five year contract to process and recycle the entire towns waste on condition we got the neccessary permit". Following the change of location, Megan has been a regular visitor to the dumpsite and this is how she learned of the local peoples desperate plight.
"There are about 15 - 20 people who live and scavenge at the dumpsite" she says " I now know most of them personally and always try to help them in any way that I can but I have realised that they are not benefiting from handouts, what they need is a source of income. Once we have set up the business on the site, I plan to give them the tools to help themselves."
"At they moment they are living on less than R50 per week, which roughly converted to pounds  is about £4.50 and most of them have families to support as well. Through our Environmental Impact Study,  based on the current volumes of trash and potential recyclable volumes we have estimated that they will earn R400 (£36)  per week or more.  Although this is not fireworks it will assist them considerably."

Megan and Richard hope to employ 5 people on a permanent basis and create 20 -25 self-employment opportunities to support the people who live and scavenge on the dumpsite.  There is great support from the community to make this happen but the Cockcrofts have found it impossible to get funding from the local authorities. Thats why she has turned to the international community to seek help.

Megan is keen to highlight that they are not specifically looking for handouts but opportunities to raise funding for a social enterprise project about which they are very passionate.  And she is committed to paying back every penny of any loans that are offered.

Blue Crane Recycling is not a registered charity, but is closely associated with  the charity organisation Afrikaanse Christelikke Vrouens Vereniging  (ACVV), which provides social welfare services for families in need.  ACVV will manage all funds allocated towards Megan and Richards recycling project to ensure that monies are spent correctly.  Megan is already involved with voluntary work with the organisation, handing out bread, fruit and cold drinks every Friday to under-privileged children in their part of town.

I asked Megan what kind of support she needs.

"To start with we need about R150 000 (roughly £13,000).  This is mostly for the purchase of 2 LDVs which is crucial given the demographics of our town and distance to point of sale (210 km).  Fencing is also needed to enclose the area we work in so as to contain the garbage as well as basic equipment for the sorters, namely spades, wheelbarrows etc". For equipment and machinery etc, we require a further R200 000 (£17,500)  The sooner we can get operational the sooner everyone can start earning an income and improving their lives.
One of the benefits of this business is that there will always be garbage and always recyclable goods and profit can be seen almost within two weeks of operation. The most critical of all is a vehicle to get the recyclables to market, from then on we can slowly build up our the enterprise".

There is great scope for this project and once fully functional Blue Crane Recycling will be able to process cardboard, paper, mixed plastics and glass, putting an end to it being buried or illegally burnt on the dumpsite.

I am aware of a couple of organisations with whom I can put Megan in touch, but I know there are many readers of this blog who have greater knowledge than me about international fundraising for children and families in such poverty as well as contacts in recycling organisations that might be able to help.  Just sharing this story via Twitter or Facebook could even help.

If you have any ideas or connections with a recycling organisation that might be keen to get involved with social enterprise projects or are even considering investing in businesses overseas, Megan would be delighted to hear from you.  Her contact details are bcrecycling@r63.co.za.

Thank you so much in advance for anything you can do.

ADDENDUM, 15 Sept 2010: If anyone wants to make an individual donation, Megan has just informed me of the account details for the ACVV charity branch that is local to her, where direct transfers can be made.  All monies will be managed by the ACVV charity, but you need to reference any donation with BCRECYCLING to ensure the funds are allocated to this project.  Megan will keep us up-to-date with how much is raised and how the project is progressing.

This post was compiled during National Zero Waste Week 2010, whilst I was blogging from Saints Cafe in Bury St Edmunds about their fabulous ides to help minimise food waste.  The Blue Crane Recycling project was never far from my mind and what struck me this week was the statistic that an average family wastes £50 per month, throwing away food that could have otherwise been used if it was stored or managed properly.  Its blue sky thinking but what if all that money could be used to help level the imbalance of poverty instead of food thats left to rot in landfill?   It just highlights that the food waste problem in the UK is not just an environmental problem, its a wasted opportunity to help alleviate poverty too.

Im fat and want to lose weight does my provincial health care system or employer care that Im trying to get healthy

National Health album coverImage via Wikipedia

When I started Dr. Bernstein, I knew the cost of the program. If youve read my other posts, I have no problem rationalizing why I support paying the $150 per week for the program (since I was paying the same amount per week ingesting fatty foods and imbibing in sugar-laden booze and pop.)

When you register, the clinic tells you that your private employer health insurance, or your province, might cover your costs.

All excited, I checked with my plan. Unfortunately, in 2006, my health plan decided cancel covering supplementary injections, though it had provided for it previously.

Shoot - three years too late...

This poses a theoretical debate in my mind.

As we Canadians and Americans expand our girth exponentially every year, and head to our graves in highest numbers due to heart disease (caused in large part by our horrid diets) we are implored by health officials, government promotional campaigns, education systems and a multi-billion dollar consumer industry, to lead lives of good health and practice prevention.

Eat our balanced meals from the Canadian Food Guide they say - the good balance of foods. Just dont look too intently at the rest of the contents such as MSG, preservatives, sugar, sodium and fat levels...

Here I am, for the benefit of my health, investing a sizeable sum in active weight loss and future health prevention activities and education.

Doesnt my provincial government and employer care?

Will I be able to deduct my expenditures in my annual tax return as a medical expense? I dont know yet, but Ill certainly be including it for my accountant to scrutinize.

Can I be reimbursed from my employers health plan? No - not anymore. Not for a plan that over the course of my 12 years with the same employer, and all the premiums I have paid, would have easily paid for the total cost of the program a few times over.

And would I support our public health care plan to cover these costs? Youre darn right I would. To support mine, my neighbours, my familys and my colleagues efforts to get healthier and lead more productive lives.

You cant tell me that by investing in weight loss programs and medically supervised supplements, that the productivity of our provincial and Canadian workforce isnt a good investment!

I guess for employers they dont care that I may have missed work and taken sick leave or extended medical leave for, upon reflection, what were certainly weight-induced illnesses such as:
  • back pain
  • gastrointestinal flare-ups
  • totally lethargic and lack of energy
  • a leave of absence for 3 months due to depression
Dr. Bernstein, a Canadian physician, supports government monitoring of weight loss programs - even his own.

Like him, I agree that like provincial and territorial governments in Canada should focus less on the debate to scrutinize programs, but support the public who are taking an active step forward in reaching health targets that are advocated in public policy, espoused in public outreach campaigns, and envisioned in long-term strategic health objectives.

For those of us taking an active step to improve our current and future health, and paying the hefty provincial and private premiums for the health insurance and medical plans, I expect this to be covered!

I was incensed to learn that I could receive a variety of other medical services and prosthetics that, in all likelihood, I will never need to access. However, for a service that has obvious immediate and long-term benefits, I cannot get any relief.

Now heres an issue that Ill be taking up with my union.

Better yet - heres the basis for a good public policy and program. I could easily draft up a logic model, policy framework, grant and contribution program guideline and results-based accountability framework on this one....

So boys what should you do when you get cold

Over the next few weeks I will be working with British Gas as one of their Smart Mums ambassadors, thinking about the significance of energy conservation this winter.

This project comes hot on the heels of the energyshare campaign, where I saw the hard work of communities who are trying to create energy from renewable sources.  With all the complexities of such a project, its a far cry from the simplicity of flicking a switch in our homes to immediately emblazen rooms in light or to turn up the heat.

With the festive season being one of the coldest times of the year and now the boys are off school, its been a good time to have a chat with them about how we can save energy over the holidays.

I caught them by surprise, this Sunday, just as my youngest came home from swimming and my eldest was about to embark on a Pokemon Fest at the computer, wearing just a short sleeved top  - his choice - brrrrr.  The house was not particularly warm that day.

"What should you do if you get cold?" I asked.

A simple question.

"Turn up the radiators!" shouted one.

"Dive under a blanket!" called the other.

The first was just being a frivolous tease.  He knows we have a permanent choice of blankets in our living room, which are always put to good use whenever were sat around watching television, or using the laptop.  Aside from the technology, it takes us right back to an era when central heating wasnt available. Im snuggling under one, whilst writing this post.

Of course, being just seven and ten, when the boys are not sat around, theyre tearing around the house, using their own energy to keep warm.

Its just a shame I cant harness that and divert it back into the National Grid.

Or the sound of their laughter too, just like in Monsters Inc.

Were actually pretty good at managing the heating and putting on extra layers.  However, our particular downfall is leaving the lights on, especially in the childrens rooms, when they are rushing around to get to school.  Its always the bedside lights that are a pain to remember to turn off.

So he who laughed about turning up the radiators has now got his nose to the grindstone, designing mini-posters to remind him and his brother to turn off the lights!

And if that doesnt work, as a back-up plan Im busy gathering together a load of pennies as a financial incentive, so that each time they remember to turn them off, they will physically be able to visualise the saving too.

The problem with that last strategy is that I can see them turning on the lights especially to turn them off again.

Best not tell them about that one yet then!

Dr Bernstein Diet

Lunch LadyImage by keltickelton via Flickr

I can still remember the day. We ladies, kibitzing in the boardroom eating our lunches and engaging in random thoughts of the day and opinions on this or that. When to my surprise we started chatting about weight loss. My dreaded topic. I was peaking at 207 lbs - the equivalent from my highest weight during the pregnancy of my second child. However, the problem was, she came into the world three years ago and I still couldnt shed the weight.

This success photo of another patient shows roughly what I started at, and where Im progressing to.

Somewhere between the rum & cokes, Mikes Hard Lemonade, red wine and rich foods, I lost my figure and sense of self. I tried to lose it the usual way; reduce portions, load up veggies and even hired a private in-home trainer to whip my ever-expanding ass into shape. Nothing worked.

So my curiosity peaked when a colleague talked about Dr. Bernstein. Everyone else knew about the weight loss clinic and raved about people they knew who had lost pounds and pounds of weight quickly and kept it off.

That was it for me. Quick weight loss? I mean, stories about a hundred pounds and rapid visible results. Thats what I needed. Thats what I wanted. I needed to see results to do it.

I had tried other methods - other groups, such as Weight Watchers. It may work for some, but for me, I didnt need a cheering squad or a coach, like an AA sponsor, that I could call to talk me away from the fridge; talk me down from the precipice of chocolate cupcake sugar suicide. I needed to completely rethink my relationship with food and drink, and get back to basics.

No, I liked the thought of medically-supervised serious results. After all, Im a public servant. I like results. I believe in quick, fast, meaningful investments to get tangible results.

I work that way.

I live my life that way.

I had to give it a try.

So, I did some research. You should never embark on anything without checking a few sources. For a good balanced article see the following link.

I made a call and I was booked for my consultation on the Tuesday morning. Its $150 for your consultation at our Ottawa, ON clinics. I didnt mind - I was set to commit to the program.

I read and filled in the background documents and was really excited to go in and get started.

I was really impressed by the professionalism and medical seriousness of the program. I like having my urine scrutinized; the thrice-weekly inquiry into the state of my health. Perhaps Im egocentric that way, but I like the medical establishment giving a damn about how Im doing. particularly when Im paying a hefty price for the priviledge.

For those looking to join be prepared for the financial commitment. The program is $150 per week, which covers the cost of the 3x weekly injections, medical support and bi-weekly physicians consultation. If you know you will be on the program 8 weeks or more, its better to just pay upfront to get the discounted price. In April 2009, the 8-week fee with tax was $1,100, with an additional $26 for your daily vitamins and food scale. Your potassium prescription is another $30-40 per month, depending on what you need.

When I went back over our bank statements to see how much I spent on restaurants/take-out orders, wine/beer for weekends and entertaining, and lunches at work, we easily spent that amount from our family income on crappy, fattening, sugar and grease-laden food.

Was it a difficult choice for me to redirect what I was already spending into something healthful and beneficial for me? For my health? For my sanity? Hell no!

I know my husband agrees that its an investment in the right direction. After all, hes had to live with the depression, anger, buying ever-expanding clothes to cover my expanding girth, only to see that by supporting the financial decision to lose the weight, benefits my health and wellness to the benefit of everyone. However, for me, the financial investment to finally rid myself of the pounds is an investment (and charge on my Visa) that I am gladly making.

To me its a reinvestment in my health.

Plus Im an equal breadwinner in the home - I can also decide where the funds go. Yes, Im being selfish, and you know what, Im worth it! Thats my personal and feminist rant for this blog....! However, beware that I am prone to express an opinion or two...

Back to the program cost.

Youre not required to stay with the program if it doesnt work for you, and you dont need to purchase the vitamins or scale through the clinic, but they do have them at a cheaper price than even Walmart, so why not?

As for food? Its just regular grocery store food - just carefully selected - and costs no more than what goes into the regular weekly family shopping cart.

Beware though, that 4-5 people who reach their goal weight and DO NOT continue in the maintenance program (which is $150 per month with once weekly injections and medical consultations) regain the weight back.

Im fully prepared to stay on Maintenance, to be sure Im reintroducing the right foods back into my diet and monitored to find my bodys right balance. I got myself into the original mess - I know Ill need the help to stay on course. They recommend 2-3 months on Maintenance to keep you on track. Im planning on the $750 per year (the equivalent of the cost a gym membership) for annual Maintenance. Considering how many times Ive signed up for a full year membership to a gym at that cost - went 2-3 times - and just never went back, I KNOW Ill get more benefit from the Maintenance program.

Its a financial choice and one that luckily Im able to make right now.

If youre thinking of doing it, do some research. There are various options and some work better for others. Check out this video though and buyer beware. While Dr. Bernstein Clinics have been around for 30 years and operate around North Amercia, check what will work best for you and get some advice from your physician.

Im so glad I heard about Dr. Bernstein Clinic - over lunch, of all things.

Monday Meeting The Rubbish Diet Challenge Wk 4

Welcome to Week 4 of The Rubbish Diet Challenge. I cant believe that already were almost half-way through. In one way, it feels like a hard slog, but in other ways, the times been whizzing along, and it will be Week 8 before we know it.

Sadly I didnt get a chance to publish the regular Friday Journal during Week 3, due to battling a cold and Wi-Fi failure, but did you spot the latest news from Sainsburys?  In a bid to help reduce food waste, their new labelling will now advise customers that they can freeze products right up to the Use By date, replacing outdated advice which instructed households to freeze on day of purchase. Thats great news and hopefully other supermarkets will follow and update their guidelines too.

By now, anyone taking part in The Rubbish Diet should have got to grips with their local recycling services, discovered the extra facilities that are available through local shops and have started thinking about what food waste really means to them.  New habits will be starting to fall into place and while these are put into practice, participants will be wondering what else they can possibly do, to cut down their landfill waste even further.

Well in the world of waste-busting antics, theres always that little something.

So are ready for Week 4?  If so, its time to grab your Marigolds and get cracking.

Week 4 is all about domestic chores. Sorry. Its never been my highlight either. Id much rather be creative around the house, having loads of fun rather than clearing it up.  But one has to be responsible and I soon realised that cleaning and clearing up needed my creativity too, especially  if I was going to commit to reducing my waste even further.  Some of the things I tested a few years ago fell by the wayside, but most of the changes have remained in place, saving bags full of waste and pockets full of cash, as youll see from some of the mini-challenges that are set for this week.  More information and background material can be found in the online guide that accompanies the challenges detailed below.

1. Reduce the burden.  This week its time to go through your kitchen cupboards and sort out the bad from the good.  Many cupboards will be bursting with cleaning products that have been bought as a result of impulse purchases, but end up sitting there gathering dust while households rely on a core number of products.  Recognise which ones work for you and promise not to succumb to temptation again. Promise to use up the spare products soon or give them away to friends or via Freecycle.  When buying cleaning products in future, look out for condensed products or consider using natural alternatives. These days, you can even buy microfibre cloths for many aspects of your household routine, which promise to scrub and buff up your surfaces without needing any chemicals at all.

2. Reuse all you can. Of course, this principle carries through the whole of The Rubbish Diet, but when it comes to cleaning and household chores, it is amazing how much waste can be reduced through replacing disposable and consumable products with reusable items. I used to spend a fortune on disposable wipes, paper towels and sponges until I switched to washable cleaning cloths and longer lasting washing up gear.  Equally, having switched to Eco-balls and more lately the Eco Egg, I have also saved hundreds of pounds on laundry powder, and this has helped slim our recycling bin too.  So, as you work through your household chores this week, think about changes that you could ease into your lifestyle and try giving them a go.

3.Recycle those empties.  Household cleaner or detergent bottles are now classed as one of the more widely-recyclable containers in the UK, which means they are collected by most local authorities. So, even if your council does not accept the wider variety of plastics, they may still collect these.  If you are not in the habit of recycling these bottles regularly and are still unsure if your local council takes them, you can check easily, by calling your local council or visiting the Recycle Now website.

4.Downsize your rubbish bin. If youve experienced a huge boon to your recycling activities since Week 1 along with a diminished amount of rubbish, its time to celebrate by reorganising your bin bags! Not only will this provide you with a physical sense of achievement, but it also creates a physical reminder amongst your household to keep on going.  If your actual kitchen recycling bin is smaller than your rubbish bin, try switching them around and make more space for your recycling. Another technique that you can try is to remove the rubbish bins from everywhere else in the house, or particular rubbish hotspots e.g. the home office, bathrooms or bedrooms to ensure that everything is brought to the kitchen for sorting to disposal.  Some councils also allow you to swap your large wheelie bin for a smaller one, just like Terry-Anna, one of our bin-slimmers from Ipswich, discovered a few weeks ago.

And of course on the subject of our bin-slimmers, todays the day for catching up with how they are getting on with their individual missions. Most of them will still have another week to go until their rubbish gets collected so as the results come in throughout the day, please note that many of these will be interim figures.

Okay back to basics

Wow - I actually had a day off today and spent some time on the computer, and I realized I havent posted on the blog since - what - May!  Oh my - that wont do.

Well, a moment to reflect and confess.  I did get down to 143 since my last posting, but Im now up to 160.  I know - 20 lbs over the summer and fall.  I tell you, its been quite a lesson in weight mis-management.

I even tried to get back on strict at the clinic in September, but failed miserably in large part due to my hectic work/travel schedule.  Its brutal trying to stick to strict when youre traveling outside of a Bernstein-zone where you cant get to a clinic every other day for your shots, and trying to eat in restaurants or you cant take your own foods with you due to no fridge.

Its also ridiculous to think that I can eat what I want, when I want, and not pack on the pounds.  I mean really - bread, starches, wine/booze - you just cant win with those in the house.  For me that is.

So, Im looking in my closet and the whole new beautiful wardrobe that I bought last year is starting to feel a little tight.  My size 10 pants are getting snug - and my size 8 skinny jeans - well, they are hung up and just sitting there staring at me.  And i so love those jeans, so enough is enough!!

Before I head into the holiday season and surrounded by sweets, wine, starches and sauces galore, Im going to give myself a 2-week personal boot camp and give my cupboards an overhaul.

Im also going to reread this blog to reconnect with how I managed my foods, travel and self-discipline in the first place that empowered me to lose all the weight in the first place.  Ive relogged onto Calorie Count to track my intake, and Im going to get serious about my diet sheet and intake.

While I love the ladies (and gents) at the clinic, Im doing this on my own this time.

....and I promise to write again.

TTYL!
